Janine Hoft

Attorney

Janine L. Hoft had the honor and privilege of trying her first jury trial in 1984 successfully defending activists who were arrested outside the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and acquitted of criminal charges of mob action. Janine a/k/a Jani has continued to advocate for progressive activists, representing members of the Pledge of Resistance, Anti-apartheid organizations, the Shadow Project, the Sanctuary Movement, ACT-UP, and Queer Nation. Jani also proudly and passionately represents survivors of false arrest, police brutality, illegal strip searches and families with loved ones who have died in law enforcement custody and is in awe of her clients’ courage to take a stand against institutional violence. She also represents survivors of sexual abuse in civil suits against their perpetrators. She has secured six figure verdicts and settlements. Jani is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, the Central District of Illinois, the Southern District of Illinois and the Northern District of New York. She has been with the People’s Law Office continuously since 1984, except for a three year sabbatical as a law professor directing the Public Interest Law Firm, a clinical program of the Syracuse University College of Law. She resides on the Northwest side of Chicago with her partner, Linda, and various adult children.
